Keyboard shortcuts for Basecamp, Coda (Superhuman Docs) and Raindrop.io

A project tool, a document editor and a bookmark manager share one keyboard habit: much of the work goes through a box you type into. Basecamp has the Jump menu, opened with Ctrl + J or Shift + J, which lists matching projects, people and recent items as you type. Coda, which its help center now calls Superhuman Docs, opens a slash menu when / follows a space, and = starts a formula. Raindrop.io's search field, reached with Ctrl + F, takes operators such as #tag and created:YYYY-MM-DD.

Each app keeps its own section with its table, notes and source, and every table puts the Windows keys beside the Mac ones. Not every row is a chord: Basecamp logs out on a typed :wq, Coda turns Markdown such as ##, Space into a header, and the Raindrop.io table lists mouse actions like Shift + Click and Drag.

The Raindrop.io apps for iOS and Android are not covered, and Coda formulas are covered only as far as the key that starts one. Linear, Alfred, Notion and Todoist have pages of their own.

Basecamp 43

Basecamp organises a team's work into projects that hold messages, to-do lists, cards, docs, events and chat. Its table covers the Shift-and-letter hotkeys and number keys for Home, My Tasks, Activity and the other views, the Jump menu, Pings and notifications, keys that act inside a project tool, Calendar and Lineup navigation, and the text editor.

Shift hotkeys

Almost every Basecamp hotkey is Shift and one letter: Shift + H for Home, Shift + T for My Tasks, Shift + V for Do Today and Shift + S for the sidebar with Pings and notifications. The number keys 1 to 4 open Activity, Calendar, Reports and Everything without Shift. Tapping Shift shows the keycaps on screen, inside a text field a double tap turns on hotkey mode, and ? opens Help.

The jump menu

Ctrl + J on Windows and Linux, Cmd + J or Cmd + K on a Mac, or Shift + J anywhere opens Jump, a search box for projects, people and recent items. It is the equivalent of a command palette and removes most navigation through the project grid. Inside it, Shift + Enter searches all projects and Shift + Alt + Enter (Shift + Option + Return on a Mac) only the current one, as the cheat sheet gives them; Basecamp's Searching article describes these two keys differently.

Writing

In the editor, Ctrl + B and Ctrl + I (Cmd + B and Cmd + I on a Mac) apply bold and italic. In a list, Tab nests an item and pressing Enter twice ends the list. Links come from the toolbar's link button, and files are added with the attachment icon or by dragging them in; the help names no shortcut for either. Markdown also works as you type, such as ## for a heading. In Chat, Enter posts the message.

Which keys open the Jump menu in Basecamp?

Ctrl + J on Windows and Linux, Cmd + J or Cmd + K on a Mac, and Shift + J on any system. Typing then lists matching projects, people and recent items.

Text and structure

Ctrl + B, Ctrl + I and Ctrl + U format text, Ctrl + Shift + 1 to Ctrl + Shift + 3 apply the three header sizes (Cmd + Option + 1 to Cmd + Option + 3 on a Mac), and Ctrl + K turns a selection into a link. Mistakes are reversed with Ctrl + Z and re-applied with Ctrl + Y (Cmd + Shift + Z on a Mac), and Ctrl + Shift + F opens search. Typing / after a space opens the slash menu, which gathers headers, tables, views, buttons, templates and media in one place, so building blocks go in without leaving the keyboard.

Panels, pages and formulas

Ctrl + / opens the Explore panel on a PC (Cmd + / on a Mac), while the shortcut list itself sits on Ctrl + Shift + /, or Ctrl + / on a Mac. Ctrl + \ shows or hides the page list, Ctrl + Alt + Up and Ctrl + Alt + Down step through pages (Cmd + Option + [ and Cmd + Option + ] on a Mac), and Shift + Esc climbs from a subpage to its parent. Typing = inserts a formula, @ a reference, and Ctrl + Shift + M adds a comment.

Tables

In a table, Space or F2 edits the selected cell and Alt + Space expands the whole row. Enter in the last row adds a row, and Tab with the last column selected adds a column. Rows and columns also move from the keyboard: Alt + Up and Alt + Down shift a row, Alt + Left and Alt + Right a column, with Option in place of Alt on a Mac. Shift + Space selects a row.

Why does Ctrl + / open a panel instead of the shortcut list?

On a PC Ctrl + / opens the Explore panel and the shortcut list is Ctrl + Shift + /. On a Mac the list is Ctrl + /, with Control rather than Cmd, and Cmd + / opens the Explore panel.

How do I add a row or a column to a table without the mouse?

Put the cursor in the last row and press Enter (Return on a Mac) to add a row. Select the last column and press Tab to add a column.

Can I type a slash in ordinary text without opening the menu?

Yes. The slash menu only appears when a space comes before /, so a pair like solutions/benefits stays plain text. If the menu does pop up, keep typing and it closes.

Does Coda turn Markdown into formatting as I type?

Yes, for a short set: #, Space to ###, Space make headers, *, Space starts a bulleted list, >, Space a block quote and three backticks a code block, while **text** and *text* give bold and italic. Search the Insert panel for Markdown to see the current list.

Saving from the browser

The extension's save key changes with the browser: Ctrl + Shift + S in Chrome (Cmd + Shift + S on a Mac, the same as in Safari) and Alt + X in Edge and Firefox, where the Mac binding is Control, Ctrl + X. With text selected on a page, the same key saves it as a highlight. Ctrl + . (Cmd + .) opens the Raindrop.io sidebar. Chrome and Edge reassign extension keys at chrome://extensions/shortcuts, Firefox has its own extension shortcut manager, and Safari does not allow custom keys.

Searching

Ctrl + F (Cmd + F on a Mac) puts the cursor in the search field and Esc clears it again. Operators typed into the field narrow the results: #tag for a tag, type:X for articles, videos or documents, created:YYYY-MM-DD for a date. Combined terms must all match unless match:OR is added, and a minus in front excludes. With the extension installed in Chrome, Firefox or Edge, typing rd and Tab in the address bar searches without opening the app. Searching inside saved page text, PDFs and YouTube transcripts needs a Pro plan.

Bookmarks, collections and tags

The list keys work on whatever has keyboard focus. Delete / Backspace moves a bookmark to Trash, where it stays until removed for good, and Shift + Click selects a run of bookmarks for bulk tagging, moving or deleting. Double-click opens the saved page. In the sidebar, Left / Right fold nested collections open or shut, Enter on the open collection renames it, and Shift held on the + button creates the new collection inside the current one. Dragging moves bookmarks between collections and nests or reorders collections.

Desktop app

The desktop app adds an application menu to the web app: Ctrl + [ and Ctrl + ] (Cmd + [ and Cmd + ] on a Mac) step back and forward through the screens you visited, and the View menu zooms the interface.

Which key saves the current page to Raindrop.io?

It depends on the browser: Ctrl + Shift + S in Chrome (Cmd + Shift + S on a Mac and in Safari), Alt + X in Edge and Firefox (Ctrl + X on a Mac). The same key saves selected text as a highlight.

Why does the Raindrop.io save shortcut do nothing?

Another extension or the browser itself may already use the same keys. In Chrome or Edge, open chrome://extensions/shortcuts and give Raindrop.io a different combination; Firefox changes it in its own extension shortcut manager. Safari does not support custom shortcuts.

Does Raindrop.io have single-letter shortcuts such as D or S?

No. The published shortcut list covers the browser extension, and the app itself binds no single letters: search is focused with Ctrl + F (Cmd + F on a Mac), and new bookmarks are added with the + Add button or the extension.

Can I search Raindrop.io bookmarks from the browser address bar?

Yes, with the extension installed in Chrome, Firefox or Edge: type rd, press Tab, then type the query. It does not work in Safari.

How do I search one tag or one type of bookmark?

Type #tag or type:X into the search field, for example #coffee or type:article. A minus in front excludes instead: -#tag or -type:video.

Questions

What does a comma between keys mean in these tables?

The keys are pressed one after the other, not held together. Shift, Shift is a double tap that turns on Basecamp's hotkey mode inside a text field, and Enter, Enter leaves a list. In Coda, #, Space is a hash followed by a space, which makes a large header. In Raindrop.io, rd, Tab is typed in the browser address bar before the search query, and the , row is the comma key itself, which separates tags. A slash marks alternatives or a pair instead, as in Up / Down or Ctrl + ] / Ctrl + [.

Which chords do different jobs in different apps on this page?

Ctrl + . folds or unfolds the current section in Coda, but in a browser with the Raindrop.io extension it opens the Raindrop.io sidebar; both use Cmd + . on a Mac. On Windows, Ctrl + [ and Ctrl + ] go back and forward in the Raindrop.io desktop app, while Coda uses Ctrl + ] / Ctrl + [ to indent and outdent. On a Mac, Cmd + K opens the Jump menu in Basecamp but inserts a link in Coda.

Which keys start a search in Basecamp, Coda and Raindrop.io?

Basecamp searches from its Jump menu, opened with Ctrl + J or Shift + J (Cmd + J on a Mac): typing lists matching projects, people and recent items. Coda opens search with Ctrl + Shift + F, Cmd + Shift + F on a Mac. Raindrop.io puts the cursor in its search field on Ctrl + F; there every word has to match unless match:OR is added, "phrase" finds the exact words and -word excludes one. Esc clears the query.

Sources and checks

Each tool on this page keeps its own source line under its table. The documented lists of these 3 tools are short enough to read together, so they share this page; each keeps its own section, and its old address redirects to that section.
