ceph status (or ceph -s) is the dashboard: health, monitor and manager quorum, OSD counts up and in, PG states and client I/O. When it says HEALTH_WARN or HEALTH_ERR, ceph health detail lists every condition with the objects involved — degraded PGs, near-full OSDs, slow requests. ceph -w streams cluster events live and is worth leaving open in a terminal during recovery. ceph mon stat shows monitor quorum — check it before anything else when commands hang.
