Midjourney Commands & Prompt Reference
Midjourney is driven by typed input: parameters at the end of a prompt set shape, style, references, GPU speed and video options, and Discord slash commands start or manage jobs. Checked against Midjourney's documentation as of October 2026, where V8.2 is the default model (since July 24, 2026). Notes flag parameters tied to certain versions, such as --edit in V8.1 and V8.2 or --oref in V7. Legacy parameters, grid buttons and website-only controls are left out.

Composition and variety (7)

Carry one look across a whole set
--sref random
After the job is submitted the word random becomes a numeric style code. Copy that code into later prompts after --sref and tune its strength with --sw (0 to 1000, default 100).
Put the same person or object into a new scene
--edit
In V8.1 and V8.2, add up to four image URLs after --edit and describe the change in plain words; --raw gives the text more weight. In V7 the equivalent is --oref with a weight set by --ow.
Follow the words more literally
--stylize 50 --raw
A low stylize value keeps the image close to the prompt (50 is the Stylize Low preset in Discord settings), and --raw removes the default styling on top of that.
Try several aspect ratios in one go
--ar {1:1, 2:3, 3:5}
A permutation expands into one job per option. It needs Fast or Turbo mode, and each job spends Fast time.
Make test videos cheaply
--video --bs 1
One SD video costs 2 GPU minutes against 8 for the default batch of four. Keep the default --motion low unless the scene needs large camera moves.
Reuse your usual parameters
/prefer option set
Save a bundle such as chaos plus aspect ratio under a name like mine, then type --mine at the end of any prompt. For parameters you want on every prompt, /prefer suffix adds them automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do parameters go in a Midjourney prompt?
At the very end, after the description, with a space before the two dashes and no commas or periods inside them. Text typed after a parameter is one of the formatting mistakes the documentation warns about.
What replaced Omni Reference and Character Reference in V8?
The Edit model. In V8.1 and V8.2, --edit followed by up to four image URLs carries people or objects into new images; --oref and --ow still work, but only in V7.
Which model does a prompt use when no version is given?
V8.2, the default since July 24, 2026, unless another default was chosen in settings. Add --version (short form --v) with a number, such as 7, to use an older model.
Which parameters stop working in V8.1 and V8.2?
The version chart marks --quality, Turbo mode, Omni Reference (--oref, --ow) and multi-prompts with :: as unavailable there, while HD output with --hd and --edit exist only in those versions.
