F9 — Record

F9 toggles Arrangement recording in Ableton Live on both Windows and Mac; Shift + F9 arms recording without starting playback, and Ctrl + Shift + F9 (Cmd + Shift + F9 on Mac) records into Session View instead.

Three record keys, three targets

Live 12 separates the record button from what it records into. F9 is the Arrangement Record button on the control bar: press it with the transport stopped and playback starts recording from the start marker on every armed track. Shift + F9 only arms the button so that recording begins on the next play command, useful when you want to count in with Space. Ctrl + Shift + F9 (Cmd + Shift + F9 on Mac) is Session Record, which records new clips into the selected slots of armed tracks rather than into the arrangement.

Arming tracks first

Nothing is captured unless a track is armed. With a track selected, C toggles its arm button, and F1 through F8 switch tracks 1 to 8 on and off. Holding Ctrl while clicking arm buttons arms several tracks at once, and the Overdub button next to Record decides whether MIDI recording adds to existing notes or replaces them. The metronome toggles with O, and Shift + Space continues playback from where it last stopped instead of from the start marker.

Where the keys come from

Ableton documents every default key in the Live 12 manual chapter on keyboard shortcuts, and the Ableton page on this site reproduces that chapter in full — 278 shortcuts grouped by the manual’s own sections, with the Mac equivalent beside each Windows key. The transport, Session View and Arrangement View sections are the ones a recording session touches most; the loop brace keys (Ctrl + F9 to Ctrl + F12) are also there for punch-in recording between markers.
